The Arakai plantation is in Queensland Australia. It’s area is around one hectare with over 12,000 plants and 5km of tea hedges. They have six different Japanese small-leaf varieties of Camellia sinensis var. sinensis: most of the plantation is Yabukita & Sayamakaori cultivars with smaller numbers of of Meirokyu, Yutakamidori, Fushin & Okumidori. Bushes are harvested every 4-5 weeks from September to April.
All plant nutrition is from a mix of certified & non-certified organic inputs. This includes microbial inoculants to reduce Nitrogen requirements this keeps the tea full of natural flavour..
There are no pesticides or fungicides used on the plantation Herbicides are occasionally used in weed management when necessary but the teas are guaranteed residue-free.
The plantation is pruned & harvested using their own creation - called the “mighty bike harvester”. It is a human-powered, low-impact machine that cuts tender leaf following the contours of the land with remarkable accuracy and reliability.
Their tea is proudly Australian - they don't, and won't, import tea from overseas to mix with their home grown tea.
Twisty black leaves with golden threads running through them. The liquor is medium body, low in tannin's, smooth, light, with good flavour and hints of fruit and spice. This tea will infuse more than once.
